Wheeling Savings & Loan Association in Wheeling, West Virginia metal coin bank made by Rehbeger. I found a recent photo of the real building, below left, which was at 25 Eleventh St. in Wheeling, West Virginia. On the right of the below photo, is an advertisement for the bank which shows the same building. I have to assume the building was the first office for the bank.

Markle Bank Building in Hazleton, Pa.

This metal coin bank represents the Markle Bank Building and is made by American Art Works. The base has the words, “Markle Bank, Member Federal Reserve, Save on Pay Day.”  Originally known as the Markle Banking & Trust Company Building, later the Northeastern Bank Building, and today, the Hayden Tower at the Markle stands in Downtown Hazleton, Pennsylvania at Broad and Wyoming streets. Built in 1910, the 11-story commercial building has 3 bays wide and 7 bays deep, with a 6-story addition in the Classical Revival style. It is constructed of reinforced concrete with a limestone and white brink facing. A six-story addition was added to the east of the original building in 1923. The structure was deemed unsafe in 1998 and closed, but then saved from the wrecking ball in 2001 by local businessman George F. Hayden. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Here are some great vintage photos of the building over the years.

Cast Iron Souvenir Buildings & Coin Still Banks

The earliest cast iron artifacts date to the 5h century BC and were discovered by archaeologist in China. Cast iron was a popular material for the production of coin banks in the 1800’s. Pictured here are the Palace Bank is a cast iron still coin bank.  A 1976 Lynchburg Courthouse in Virginia. Old South Meeting House church in Boston cast iron still bank. Hooge Huys Building Replica Bank & Clock

David W. contacted me and shared the recently discovered identity of a Dutch Wekker alarm clock and bank. The flat metal front represents the Hooge Huys building. The clock has a silvered dial, with a box in back for the clock works and coin slot. It measures 6" wide x 6-3/4" high. The Hooge Huys, in the city of Alkmaar in Holland, is a former office building of the insurance company Hooge Huys, now called REAAL. The building was designed by Alexander Kropholler, in the style of Dutch traditionalism. The building was constructed of red Roman bricks. In the six steps story gable to the Langestraat is a medallion affixed. At this medallion is a pelican feeding her young with her ​​own blood, as a symbol of charity.

Coin banks, made mostly by the company Banthrico, could be categorized into architectural styles. The following list of building replica still banks are considered mid-century modern - a style that emphasized large and ample windows, open floor plans, and flat planes with changes in elevation. This style emerged about 1945 and continued to the 1960s.
