This metal souvenir of the Kodokan International Judo Center in Tokyo was purchased by fellow collector, Mark F, who found it in a Toronto, Canada flea market a few years ago. It is dated March 25, 1958. This real building complex has been renovated and added to after the production of this building replica. In the souvenir, the taller side is now the shorter side as a newer 8-story building has been constructed next to it. Changes to the structure happened sometime after 1958. See photos of the building before and after changes, below. The first judo World Championships were held in 1956 in Tokyo, with 31 contestants from 21 countries. The rapidly expanding popularity of Judo internationally justified the construction of a new Kodokan in 1958 in the Bunkyo-ku district of Tokyo, close to the former location in the Suidobashi district. The Kodokan building also has residential facilities and contains a total of six dojo's, including the international dojo and women's dojo.
I collect 3D metal souvenir building replica of architecture from around the world. If you have any to sell or trade, contact me via my email address in the “complete profile” link at the top right of this blog.
